As a candidate for Kaua'i County Council, I’m proud to have re-signed and committed to the Our Hawai’i Pledge once again. This pledge represents my unwavering dedication to our local families, rejecting the influence of big money and special interest groups that too often steer policies away from benefiting our communities. This year, more than ever, this commitment is vital as we navigate some of the toughest challenges our island has faced.
The Our Hawai’i Pledge is backed by 19 leading organizations across the pae ‘āina, and it serves as a beacon of what true leadership should be—focused on the needs and values of kama’āina and kānaka maoli first. This pledge is my public affirmation that I stand with those who prioritize affordable housing, environmental preservation, and indigenous rights over corporate profits. For me, it’s not just a box to check; it’s a reminder of the path we must take to ensure our future generations can thrive here, in the home we all love.
Why the Our Hawai’i Pledge Matters
The Our Hawai’i Pledge is more than just a statement—it’s a commitment to policy-making that aligns with the needs of the people. This pledge means rejecting donations and influence from big corporations and entities that don't have the best interest of our community in mind. Instead, it allows us to craft policies that will benefit working families, preserve our culture, and protect our environment. By signing this pledge, candidates like myself demonstrate that we are ready to put the well-being of our communities above all else.
Kauaʻi has unique challenges—soaring housing costs, the ongoing impacts of climate change, and the delicate balance of tourism and local culture. For years, decisions have been made by those with deep pockets, and it’s time we reclaim our power as a community. By refusing special interest money, we shift the narrative from one of profit-driven agendas to one where people come first.
I have dedicated my work to fair and sustainable food systems, environmental justice, and community-driven change, and my commitment to the Our Hawaiʻi Pledge reflects these values. It's time for leadership that looks out for all of us, not just a few. Together, we can create a future for Kaua’i that honors its past and ensures a sustainable, thriving future for all.
This election cycle, I’m asking for your support, not just for my campaign, but for a vision of Kaua’i that puts our families and our ‘āina first.
I’m proud to stand by the Our Hawai’i Pledge. Let’s keep pushing forward together.
Mahalo nui loa, Fern Holland
